# Getting started with analysis

> Accessing the results, understanding the analysis interface and reading a table.

Fieldwork is over: time to analyze. Everything happens in the **Results** tab of your survey. There you review each question, choose how it is displayed, filter and cross the answers.

This page sets out the basics. The more advanced features (crosstabs, filters, comparisons) each have their own page.

## Accessing the results

The results are in the **Results** tab of the survey. They only cover the **Completes**: the interviews carried through to the end and valid.

What you can do there depends on your **access level** on the survey.

| Access level | On the results |
| - | - |
| **Read-only** | Review and filter the results, without changing the subtotals or the crosstabs. |
| **Full access** | Everything: filter, cross, create subtotals, prepare the data. |

<Note>
  Access levels are managed in **Summary → Collaboration**. See the Getting started section for sharing a survey.
</Note>

## The analysis interface

By default, each question is displayed **flat**: its raw results, item by item.

* **Choose the chart type** in the right-hand panel: horizontal bar, vertical bar, pie or stacked vertical bar.
* **Switch to Table** from the left sidebar: you then see the individuals and the percentages.
* **Sort the items** in ascending or descending order (on a horizontal bar chart).

<Tip>
  The chart type you choose is **remembered**: it stays in place even after you leave and reopen the platform.
</Tip>

## Grouping items into a subtotal

A **subtotal** brings several items of a question together into a single result. For example: grouping the high importance levels into one "important".

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the subtotals">
    On the question, click **Subtotal → Add a subtotal**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name the subtotal">
    Give it a clear name (e.g. "Important").
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the items">
    Select the items to group.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm">
    The subtotal appears among the results. Edit it with the pencil icon, delete it with the bin icon.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Subtotals work on almost every question type, **except open-ended questions**.

## Key reading points

A few notions come up in every table.

| Point | What it is |
| - | - |
| **Base** | The number of respondents the result covers. |
| **Individuals / percentage** | The raw number of answers, or its share as a percentage. |
| **Overall** | The full base. Click **Overall** to go back to the unfiltered results. |
| **Weighted base / Raw base** | The base displayed. The results stay **always weighted**, even when displayed as individuals: only the base figure changes. |
| **Significance test** | Indicates whether a gap between two columns is statistically significant. |
| **Level of confidence** | The threshold of the test: **90%** by default. |

## Exporting a question

Each question can be exported individually, without going through a report:

* the **table** of the question in **Excel** format (individuals and percentages);
* the **chart** as an **image** or in **PowerPoint**;
* for an open-ended question, the list of **verbatims** (interview ID + verbatim) in Excel format.

The active filter is kept in the export. For all the formats and to track your exports, see [Exporting your deliverables](/en/rapport/exports).

## The results preferences

The settings that apply to the whole survey are in the **results preferences**: significance test type, level of confidence, display bases, chart boundaries and export formats.

<Note>
  The **level of confidence** is unique for the whole survey (90, 95 or 99%). The **test type**, on the other hand, can vary between the flat analysis, a survey comparison and each slide of a report.
</Note>

### Questionnaire base or total base

You choose the base the filtered questions are calculated on:

* **Questionnaire base**: each filtered question covers the base of only the respondents who saw it.
* **Total base**: all the questions cover the full sample. A **"no answer"** item is added automatically for the respondents who did not see the question.

### Chart boundaries

Two display scales for charts, in the results as well as in the report:

* **Fitted to the values**: the largest data point takes up the full width (so an item at 30% can look very large).
* **Fixed 100% base**: all the charts share the same scale.

### Export formats

The **individual data format** (with labels or with codes; Excel, CSV or Triple S) and the **Excel export format** (one tab per question or a single tab) are also set here. The details are on [Exporting your deliverables](/en/rapport/exports).
