# Available question types

> The catalog of question formats and the right use for each one.

poll\&roll offers a wide range of **question types**. Choose the format according to what you want to measure. This page reviews them family by family, with, for each one, when to use it.

## Closed questions

The respondent chooses from items that you define.

| Type | What it is | When to use it |
| - | - | - |
| **Single choice** | Only one choice possible. Displayed as checkboxes, a dropdown, images, or search within the list. | A question with an exclusive answer (gender, preferred brand…). |
| **Multiple choice** | Several choices possible. | When several answers can coexist (brands known, usages…). |

<Tip>
  The **Single choice / Multiple choice** switch can still be corrected afterwards. A mistake of this kind can be fixed without redoing everything.
</Tip>

## Grids

| Type | What it is | When to use it |
| - | - | - |
| **Single choice grid** | **Rows** (items) rated on **columns** (a scale or attributes), one answer per row. | Rating several items on the same scale (agreement on a series of statements). |
| **Multiple choice grid** | The same, but with several answers per row. | Associating several attributes with each item (e.g. which brands for which usages). |

## Open-ended questions

| Type | What it is | When to use it |
| - | - | - |
| **Open-ended question - single** | A single free-text field. | Collecting a verbatim, a reason, a suggestion. |
| **Open-ended question - multiple** | Several free-text fields. | Listing several elements in plain text (e.g. naming three brands). |

## Numerical questions

| Type | What it is | When to use it |
| - | - | - |
| **Numerical** | Entry of a number, with bounds (min / max) and optional decimals. Several fields are possible within the same question. A **sum of answers validation** forces a fixed total. | Quantities, amounts, or splitting a total (e.g. 100 points across line items). |
| **Scale** | Three displays: **numerical scale**, **slider** or **stars** (usually from 1 to 5). It also covers **NPS** (0-10). The slider can start in the negative (e.g. -3 to +3). Labels are possible at each end; the numerical value can be shown or hidden. | Measuring satisfaction, intention, recommendation. |
| **Ranking** | The respondent orders items (drag-and-drop or progressive selection), with a minimum / maximum number of items to rank. Full or partial ranking (top 3…). | Prioritizing preferences. |

<Tip>
  Always set a **minimum and a maximum** on a numerical question. Without bounds, a single outlier is enough to distort the averages calculated afterwards.
</Tip>

<Note>
  On a scale, **no answer is pre-selected** and the slider does not start in the middle. This is deliberate: it avoids influencing the respondent.
</Note>

## Presenting a stimulus

| Type | What it is | When to use it |
| - | - | - |
| **Description page** | A content screen: text accompanied by an image, a video or audio. It is not a question. | Presenting a concept, an instruction or a stimulus before asking questions. |

<Note>
  An image can also be inserted **directly into a question**, and even filtered — useful for a multi-cell test: a single question, with the image changing according to the cell. For audio, video or a long text, use a description page.
</Note>

### Control the exposure to a media file

When you present a stimulus, several settings help you control how the respondent sees it:

* **Force viewing**: prevent moving on until a video has been watched in full, or impose a minimum reading time on a text.
* **Zoomable miniature**: display a visual (packshot, concept) as a clickable thumbnail that the respondent can enlarge.
* **Watermark**: embed the respondent's identifier on the image or the video, to discourage the sharing of confidential content.

<Warning>
  The watermark discourages leaks, but does not block screenshots: it is not a technical protection.
</Warning>

## Special questions

| Type | What it is | When to use it |
| - | - | - |
| **Postcode** | Entry of the postcode, completed by the city. Can be recoded automatically into region, department, urban area size, UDA5 / UDA9. Handles groupings of municipalities. | Locating respondents in France and analyzing by area. |
| **Hotspots** | Selection of points of interest on an image: the respondent clicks on the areas. Deliverables: heatmap and coordinates of each point. | Spotting what catches the attention or what appeals on a visual, a packaging, a page. |
| **Tachistoscope** | Displays a media file very briefly (usually 250 to 500 ms). The respondent clicks to trigger the display themselves. | Testing **spontaneous perception**, usually followed by an open-ended question: "what did you perceive?". |
| **Device** | Automatically retrieves the respondent's device on connection. | Knowing which device was used, without asking the question. |
| **Locale choice** | The respondent chooses their language, among those programmed, before starting. | Multilingual survey: letting everyone answer in their own language. |
| **External platform** | Sends the respondent to an external link, then automatically brings them back to the platform. | Chaining with a third-party tool in the middle of the path. |

<Note>
  The **Postcode** question collects the postcode **and** the city. The combination of the two is needed to produce the recodes (via the INSEE code, handled internally and invisible to you). It only works for **France**, and the available recodes are predefined — you do not modify them.
</Note>

<Note>
  The platform already covers more than twenty languages. If one is missing, the team can add it at no extra cost.
</Note>

<Note>
  The **Google Places** question (address autocompletion, map type) also exists, to enter a precise location and retrieve its coordinates. It is not displayed by default and relies on a Google API that is **paid** in intensive use — reserve it for occasional needs. Its deliverable is rich (coordinates, address, place type) but complex: using it requires someone comfortable with data.
